Thought of the Week

Lives based on having stuff are less free than lives based either on doing or on being.

William James (1842-1910)

Explanation / Question / Challenge

Having loads of ‘stuff’ is fairly new to the human civilisation, and is most noticeable in the Western World where our houses are full of furniture, food, equipment, clothes and much more. Some people take it further and become extreme hoarders which can lead to problems. But there are also people with very little ‘stuff’ that lead happy, free and contented lives because they focus on building life memories instead.

Do material objects actually bring happiness?

Should there be a limit on how much ‘stuff’ we can have?

Is there anything in your life that ties you down, which you could reduce to make more time with family and friends?
