"Be kinder than is necessary. Because it's not enough to be kind. One should be kinder than needed."

Be kinder than is necessary. Because it’s not enough to be kind. One should be kinder than needed.”

Quoted by a school teacher to students in the book Wonder. This is the life-affirming story of a ten-year-old boy’s first year at school while coping with severe facial disfigurement. The story manages to be funny and uplifting more than it is sad.

With so much focus on body-image in the media, this book invites us to re-think our own worries by listening to a boy who has to cope with daily stares and cruel remarks.

The book is told from the point of view of his friends and family as well as the hero. It shows that everyone has their own struggles and it explores how people behave under peer pressure.

Wonder by R J Palacio is one of the new books being added to the school library from a national collection chosen by and for young people.
